Today we went to Children's South to have Jonathan's adenoids and tonsils removed. It started off with us running late - as usual (we ARE a Laughlin!! ha ha) - and, of course, we ran into traffic because of an accident in Birmingham - I know, ANOTHER big surprise!! We finally arrived and found Nan waiting for us in the waiting room!! That was so sweet and we were so glad she drove up to be with us. We got all checked in and Jonathan really liked having his blood pressure checked. After the hassle of convincing Jonathan that the gown was ok to put on, he reluctantly went with the nurse to the back - that was SO hard because he was upset and he kept crying out for his mommy!!
As we were waiting for the surgery to end, the phone in the room rang and it was the Dr. informing us that Jonathan's ears were in really rough shape and he suggested putting tubes back into his ears. We agreed so that process was done.
After the surgery, Dr. Hill came in and told us that everything went well. He said the adenoids and tonsils were big (but they aren't anymore!) and the tubes went in well. Jonathan was in recovery and should be with us in a few minutes. So, Brian and I start making phone calls to let everyone know that all was good. Nan decided it was time for her to start heading home and we just waited for Jonathan. At some point I heard on the intercom a message that included, "Stat, please". I immediately had a bad feeling in my gut like something was wrong with Jonathan but just trusted that all would be ok. About 15 minutes went by and the anesthesiologist came in and told us that they DID have some problems with Jonathan coming out of anesthesia - HOW does the Lord give us these "gut feelings"?!?! It's so amazing to me!!! Anyways, Jonathan had a lot of mucus in his throat and, as he was waking up, didn't really know what to do - how to swallow, etc. So, he choked and couldn't breath so his oxygen levels were going down. They had to intubate him and start giving him breathing treatments immediately. He said that they were waiting another 5 minutes to determine whether we'd have to go to Children's Hospital or go home.
Another few minutes went by and, thankfully, the anesthesiologist came back and told us that Jonathan was stablized and doing very well and that we could go home once he drank something. Thank you LORD!!! After another hour, we were on our way home with our precious son!!
He has really done well this afternoon. He has eaten lots of yogurt, fruit snacks, bananas, fruit salad (thanks to KK) and has had plenty to drink. I'm so proud of him but it's not over yet. The recovery is the worst and we have another week to go. Please keep us in your prayers and I'll try to keep you posted.
